Giving Back To Our Veterans
Dr. Kur Gives Our Veterans Something to Smile About
Kudos to the Veterans Smile Initiative
The New York State Dental Foundation’s first-ever NYS Veterans Smile Day Initiative, was a huge hit. I was honored to be given the opportunity to provide treatment to military men and women who have faithfully served our great nation.
Dr. Kur’s Personal Story About WWII Veteran, Frank
I was forever changed the day Frank walked into my office…
In March, 2014, I had the pleasure of treating Frank, who came to our practice complaining of pain on the upper right side of his mouth. Frank was 87 years old, lived alone, and walked with a slight limp. He entered the office wearing a sweater, slacks and a cane. His WWII Veterans Cap, navy blue and without blemish, presented a striking image.
Frank lives locally in White Plains. His wife is long deceased, and he has no close relatives to speak of nearby. He still drives himself, and he seemed to be content, in good spirits and happy overall.
After performing my examination, I told Frank that several of his teeth required removal, and he was in danger of developing an infection. He understood my concern and consented to the treatment I prescribed.
After administering local anesthesia, I started talking to Frank about his past and his time in the Navy. He described growing up in Mount Vernon, being a wild young kid, and entering the Navy in the later 1930s. Frank described being commissioned aboard the USS Independence. He reminisced about his time overseas, the loss of life amazing stories of survival he witnessed, and his reunion with former naval buddies. He even described a tale of meeting an “old pal” years ago. Frank saved this man’s life, and shortly after the war, the man looked up Frank’s whereabouts. Unbeknownst to both men, they lived only a few miles apart in Westchester County.
I was mesmerized by Frank’s tales of bravery, misfortune, death and service. Here I was, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, about to provide treatment on a Veteran of World War II, and all I could think was how lucky I am, how fortunate we all are. It made me think of how trivial our daily problems and tribulations are, compared to the lives of these men, who fought so bravely for our freedom.

Treating Veterans who have difficulty accessing care
The New York State Dental Foundation and the New York State Dental Association proudly supported the first ever NYS Veterans Smile Day Initiative, a program in which individual dentists screen and treat veterans in their offices on a designated day or days. The aim of the program is to provide essential dental services to veterans who may not otherwise be able to get the care they need.
Programs such as these are crucial because a great number of our veterans are woefully under-supported when it comes to dental care. In many cases, veterans are not eligible for dental benefits unless they’re suffering from a service-related dental condition or are former prisoners of war. Costly dental services are beyond the reach of many veterans when they can’t get financial assistance to help them pay for treatment.
Even when they do qualify for benefits from the Department of Veteran Affairs, veterans might not be able to make the long journey to the nearest VA hospital or clinic for treatment. Often, a dental problem is only one of the challenges facing a veteran who may be homeless or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or depression.
This means that veterans who can’t afford to pay for their own dental treatment often go without and suffer without help. Programs like the Veterans Smile Day Initiative, which have been organized by groups across the country, are dedicated to providing free or discounted dental services such as exams, x-rays, cleanings, filling and extractions to all veterans, with no eligibility requirements at all. In past years, hundreds of dentists in all 50 states have provided services worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to thousands of veterans.
For the 2016 Veterans Smile Day, the NYSDA and the NYSDF worked with the American Red Cross and the Veterans Miracle Network to identify veterans across the state who needed help and coordinate their treatment by dental professionals who volunteered to participate in the program. The program paired veterans with volunteers so that the patients could receive care as conveniently as possible and at no charge or at a discount.
Giving back to those who have sacrificed for us
The Veterans Smile Day Initiative is a great way for the dental profession to give back to our nation’s veterans, by helping alleviate the problems that many experience in access and treatment. It’s our way of showing how much we value the commitment and sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country, as well as our dedication to keeping those veterans healthy after they’ve served.
I have great respect for our current and past members of the military, and I was pleased—as well as humbled—to offer my services. ~ Dr. Kur

Dr. Kur extracted my 4 wisdom teeth, and also gave me four implants. Not once did I have any pain after both procedures. He did an amazing job! He and his staff were extremely friendly and very informative the entire time. If you need oral surgery this is the place to go.
Dr. Kur and his staff made my experience truly wonderful. I was in such excruciating pain until I couldn’t function. They performed an emergency extraction on my wisdom tooth. I felt much better after my surgery. The office is clean and very comfortable. Obviously no one wants to have a tooth removed, however, if you need to have this procedure done, then I would definitely recommend this practice.
Dr. Kur is an amazing oral surgeon. I had implant surgery performed & I did not experience any discomfort at all. The surgery and healing process was painless. He made sure I was totally comfortable throughout the surgery. His staff was equally compassionate. Dr. Kur followed up with a phone call in the evening to make sure I was doing well. He is an excellent doctor and I would highly recommend him to anyone who is in need of oral surgery.
Dr. Kur and his staff are fantastic. Unfortunately, my son, age 6, had to have one of his molars removed. Not only did this procedure go extremely well, (and very quick) but there was no complaining of pain afterwards. I would highly recommend Dr. Kur to anyone looking for an Oral Surgeon. Great experience!
Dr. Kur was nice, comforting, and made my extractions & implants as painless as possible. The office staff was equally as pleasant, making the paperwork as effortless as possible and were very welcoming. There is also a good payment plan available if you need it.
I had a very complex oral surgery performed by Dr. Kur. I was very anxious about having the work done, but quickly relieved after speaking with Dr. Kur and his staff. I could not be more pleased with Dr. Kur. He took the time to explain everything to me in detail before performing the many steps of my treatment. Along the way, he and his staff assisted me with all my questions and concerns. I am very happy with the outcome. Dr. Kur is extremely proficient and professional and I strongly recommend him as he is “the best of the best!”
