Dental implants can change your life and are safe and effective replacements for teeth. They are replacement teeth that look, feel and function like your own and help preserve facial structure and prevent bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.
How They Work
You may need a dental implant when other methods to restore your teeth fail because of periodontal disease, a failed root canal, trauma and dental infections. Dental implants are titanium screws, placed in healthy jawbone where teeth are missing. Dental implants are typically a two-step process, requiring an oral surgeon, like Dr. Kur to place the implant in healthy bone and your dentist, who will restore the implant with a crown.
Typically, a tooth is removed, and an implant a bone graft is placed simultaneously. After a 2-month period of integration between the implant screw and the bone, the patient is then referred back to their general dentist for crown placement. This is usually reserved for the molar teeth.
For patients presenting for implant surgery in the front of the mouth, Dr. Kur will remove the tooth, place the implant and then have your general dentist immediately place a temporary crown. The procedure is routinely performed without an incision and healing is minimal.
Dr. Kur will determine if you are a candidate for implants by examining X-rays and possibly, a CT Scan. Inserting the implant takes about an hour and is typically performed under IV sedation/general anesthesia in Dr. Kur’s office. Sometimes, implants can be placed the same day that teeth are extracted. If you require a bone graft, Dr. Kur will perform the implant procedure about three months afterwards.
When you come for a consultation, you will learn about your options, which may also involve immediate placement of a temporary crown on the implant. The implant procedure is routinely performed without an incision and healing is minimal.
Myth's, Misconceptions & Reality
Dr. Benjamin Kur continues to be a leader in the advancements & techniques in the area of Dental Implants. In his recently published article in Phelps Magazine, Dr. Kur sheds light on the misconceptions associated with dental implants.
Many of us hear from friends, family or neighbors about the “difficulties” people have had with dental implants. I’ve heard it all:
“It took my mother two years.”
“My friend had infections.”
“The implants fell out.”
“The doctor needed to perform
bone grafting twice!”
“I was told I don’t have enough bone!”
These misconceptions are strictly that – myths and misinformation. Every patient has his or her own physiologic and anatomical makeup, so every patient requires a specific diagnosis, management, and treatment.

No. An implant needs time to bond and integrate with your jawbone before it is ready for a tooth. This takes approximately 3 months. In certain cases (for example a front tooth), the general dentist can fabricate a TEMPORARY tooth for the area.
